Keep pages ranking on Google and cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
SEO & AEO Content Refresh is the practice of updating existing pages so they keep ranking in Google and keep being cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. We find the pages that are slipping in Google or losing AI citations, propose the fix as a rendered diff, check it, and publish it to your CMS or GitHub.

The problem
Content decay used to mean one thing: a page that ranked last year slowly loses its clicks. AI search added a second, faster version. A page can hold its Google position and still disappear from the answers people read in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
Pages lose clicks as they age. Competitors publish newer answers, a pricing table goes out of date, a screenshot shows last year's interface. The ranking slides a few positions at a time, so nobody notices until the traffic is gone.
An engine that cited your page last month can switch to a fresher source this month, with no change to your Google rank. Citation loss is the second and faster kind of decay, and it happens where you cannot see it.
Search Console shows clicks and positions. It does not show that ChatGPT stopped citing you or that Perplexity now quotes a competitor. Most teams watch one of the two and refresh on a calendar instead of a signal.
How it works
SEO and AEO content refresh is a loop, not a project. Each step leaves something you can inspect: the reason a page was picked, the exact change, and the checks it passed.
We watch Google Search Console for rank drops and clicks decay, and AI visibility scans for prompts where an engine stopped citing you or cites a competitor. Every page that crosses a trigger becomes an opportunity with the reason attached.
For each opportunity we draft the smallest change that can win the page back and show it as a rendered diff: what is removed, what is added, and a short summary of why. You read a page, not a wall of markdown.
Every proposal ships with a QA report: facts, links, brand voice, and structure for answer engines (a direct answer first, clear headings, an FAQ where it helps).
You set the rule. Approved changes publish to your CMS or GitHub automatically, or wait in a review queue for one click approval. Either way the page's dateModified only moves when the content materially changed.

SPF has been around for a long time, and there are many ways to think about it before you touch your DNS.
Add one TXT record at your root domain that lists every service allowed to send email for it, ending in ~all or -all.
FAQ: Can a domain have two SPF records? No, merge them into one.
dateModified updates on publish. datePublished stays as it is.
Every change is a diff
No silent rewrites. You can see each line that changed before it goes live.

What triggers a refresh
A refresh starts when a page gives you a reason. Two sources feed the queue, and each opportunity carries the trigger that created it, so you always know why a page is in front of you.

AEO vs SEO
SEO
Search engine optimization: earning a position in search results, and the click that comes with it.
AEO
Answer engine optimization, also called GEO or generative engine optimization: being quoted or cited inside the answer an AI engine gives.
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the search results | Be quoted or cited inside the AI answer |
| Where it shows up | Google's blue links and rich results | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot |
| What the engine reads | Relevance, links, page experience, freshness | A direct answer it can lift, clear structure, current facts, sources it trusts |
| Signal of success | Clicks and position | Citations and mentions, per engine |
| How it decays | Slowly, as competitors publish newer pages | Fast, when an engine switches to a fresher source |
| What a refresh changes | Coverage of the query, updated facts, internal links | Answer first, extractable sections, FAQ, updated facts |
The verdict
SEO and AEO are measured differently, but they share one asset: the page. Optimizing for one and ignoring the other means fixing the same page twice, or not at all. One refresh workflow that serves both is what SEO & AEO Content Refresh means.
Proof, and how we measure it
The useful question is not whether refreshing works, but which refreshes paid off. Here is an outside signal, and the method we hold our own results to.
AirOps reports a 20% increase in ChatGPT and Perplexity citations after refreshing its own content.
Their number, measured on their site, not ours. It is a useful signal that answer engines respond to clearer, more current pages.

Compared
Spreadsheet audits and content optimization tools were built for Google rankings alone. Here is where an SEO and AEO content refresh workflow differs.
| Capability | Manual refresh | Generic content optimization tool | SEO & AEO Content Refresh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finding what to refresh | Someone exports Search Console and sorts a spreadsheet | You pick the page | Search Console and AI visibility triggers, with the reason attached |
| Seeing lost AI citations | Only if someone asks each engine by hand | Usually not covered, the score is built around Google keywords | Per engine, from AI visibility scans |
| What you review | A rewritten doc or a CMS draft | A content score and keyword suggestions | A rendered diff with a change summary and a QA report |
| Publish dates | Depends on who edits and what the CMS does | Out of scope | dateModified moves only on a material change |
| Getting it live | Copy and paste into the CMS | Copy and paste into the CMS | Auto publish or review queue, to your CMS or GitHub |
| Knowing it worked | Before and after, which mixes in the effect of page age | The score goes up | Compared with a same age cohort of pages that were not refreshed |
FAQ
AEO content refresh is updating an existing page so AI answer engines cite it again: the answer comes first, the facts are current, and the structure is easy to quote. SEO & AEO Content Refresh does this while also protecting the page's Google ranking, in one workflow.
Content decay is the gradual loss of clicks, rankings or AI citations on a page as it ages and competitors publish fresher answers. In Google it shows up as falling clicks and position in Search Console. In AI answers it shows up as an engine citing someone else.
Refresh when a signal tells you to, not on a fixed calendar: clicks, position or citations dropping. As a rule of thumb, review your highest value pages at least once a quarter even when nothing has fired.
SEO is ranking in search results and earning the click. AEO, answer engine optimization, is being quoted or cited inside the answer that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews give. They are measured differently (clicks and position versus citations and mentions) but they share one asset, the page, so one refresh workflow should serve both.
Often, and it should be measured rather than assumed. AirOps reports a 20% increase in ChatGPT and Perplexity citations after refreshing its own content. We measure every refresh against a same age cohort of pages that were not refreshed, because pages gain or lose traffic with age on their own.
Yes, for practical purposes. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) describe the same goal: being cited in AI generated answers. We use AEO because it pairs naturally with SEO.
Update dateModified when the content materially changes. Do not rewrite datePublished, and do not bump dates on pages that did not change. A new date on unchanged content does not make the page fresher, and it makes every date on your site harder to trust.
Yes, with guardrails. Every refresh is a proposal shown as a rendered diff, it passes QA before anyone sees it, and your rules decide whether it publishes automatically or waits in a review queue.
