--scope user makes the server available in every directory (without it, Claude Code keeps it in local scope and it only appears in the directory where you ran the command). Use --scope project instead to write a .mcp.json for the repo. Without a header that file holds no secret, so it is safe to commit and each teammate signs in.

A server. A skill is a markdown file that changes how Claude behaves, a plugin is a bundle that can contain skills and servers together, and only a server can actually fetch a live search volume or check what ChatGPT says about a brand. We ship a skill too, but the server is what brings the data.
